Skagway, AK - Day 7
Much like our time in Juneau we had a pretty busy itinerary while in Skagway. Before I dive into that I must state that upon arriving into port this was the first time we experienced colder weather while on our cruise. It was a pretty foggy and chilly morning when we disembarked. Something that is really unique about this small port town is that on the rock wall next to the docks they have all these painted murals of each ship that has visited for decades.
Skagway is also fairly well known for the White Pass and Yukon Railway which leaves right from port and takes up the mountain into the Yukon in Canada. Our morning consisted of meeting up with our group and catching a shuttle to board the White Pass train headed North to British Columbia. The train was an older style with benches and the ability to move about the car and out on to the platforms for some amazing photos and videos as we passed by hundreds (yes I said hundreds) of waterfalls, across bridges and through tunnels.
The train ride up the mountain was incredible and a must do if you find yourself in Skagway for a a day. Due to the time of year (May 2019) the snow was just starting to melt which is why there were so many waterfalls everywhere we looked. We didn’t have any idea what to expect once we got to the Yukon as it is literally the middle of nowhere. Much to our surprise the clouds started to break and the blue sky and sun started to peak through exposing the beauty of this part of North America.
Once we arrived in British Columbia we disembarked the train and hopped on a bus with our group for a short drive to our final destination the Yukon suspension bridge over the Tutshi river. This suspension bridge is 65 feet above some of the highest class rapids anywhere in the world. The view from the middle of the bridge is like something from a postcard and one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever been.
On our way back down the mountain by bus we had our first and only encounter with black bear crossing the road. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to get my camera so I snapped this passing by from my phone. Once the bear crossed the road he climbed up the embankment and disappeared into the woods.
Upon arriving back in Skagway we had a few hours before we needed to board the ship so we roamed around the town and soaked in as much as we could. Here’s just some of the interesting things we saw while hanging out in downtown Skagway.
Just for fun here are some great shots of the ship we were on the Norwegian Bliss.
